<P>圣母玛利亚的生平鲜有人知，只是在《新约》里面有少许记录，其中最重要的当属天使报喜和耶稣降生的故事。 </P>
<P>根据记载，玛利亚的父母是约亚敬和安娜，玛利亚三岁时被送往耶路撒冷参加神殿的仪式，自己走上长梯直到大祭祀的面前。长大后玛利亚与木匠约瑟订婚，居住在加利利的那撒勒城。正是在这个时候，上帝派遣天使加百列来到了未婚的玛利亚面前报喜，告诉玛利亚作为圣女的她，她已经怀孕并将产下一个儿子，名字应该叫耶稣。玛利亚回答天使说，我当然愿意做上帝的使女。 </P>
<P>自从中世纪以来，"天使报喜”(The Annunciation)一直是艺术家们广为描绘的。画中除了玛利亚和天使，还经常出现代表圣灵的鸽子，即耶稣通过肉身来到人间。天使还会拿着一只百合，象征玛利亚的圣洁。玛利亚则拿着一本书，象征应验《旧约》里面处女生子的预言。有的画家还会画上亚当和夏娃被逐出伊甸园作为背景，象征人类的堕落和觉者来世以救度人类。 </P>
<P>意大利画家安吉利哥(Fra Angelico)弟兄偏爱使用鲜亮的色彩来表现神灵，偏爱画"天使报喜”，即天使加百列与玛利亚间的神圣对话。他将圣母玛利亚高兴接受上帝使命的情形画得很逼真。在画里面，在圣马可教堂（San Marco）的回廊上，"天使报喜”中的草地上有白色和红色的花。圣母的身材与房子大小比例来看高大，似乎是要指出她才是神圣的殿宇，她白袍上轻柔地罩着一件蓝色外衣，强烈暗示地对比了道明会的黑色外衣。在圣马可教堂其它圣母的壁画中，她的斗篷是灰紫色，罩在红色的长袍上，而这些都是代表悲伤和殉道的颜色。 </P>

<P>意大利画家巴罗西(Barocci )于1582～1584年为他的赞助人的礼拜堂画的"天使报喜”，则采用了简单而复杂的表现手法，就是通过天使和玛利亚的手势，以及恬美的笑容。还有一只卧在角落里的猫，使得整个神圣的事情就如同发生在我们的身边一样实实在在的。 </P>

<P>而意大利著名画家达芬奇(Leonardo Da Vincci)于1472-1473年创作的《林中天使报喜》，则采用了一种肃穆的表现手法，画面色彩凝重，玛利亚身后高大的建筑和面前摆放着雕塑精美的几案衬托出庄严神圣的气氛，而天使长加百列屈尊而跪的姿态和深红色的裙裾，无不烘托着为了救度世人的耶稣的来临是一件无比严肃的事情，是多么的重大神圣。</P>
