<P>美国航空航天局(NASA)的史匹哲天文望远镜观察到宇宙空间迄今发现的最大的摧毁性变化之一，四个巨大的星系正在彼此撞击在一起，在此过程中甩出了数十亿颗星体。
<P>这四个银河系发生剧烈碰撞后，将最终熔合成为一个巨大的星系，新的巨大星系质量大约有我们这个银河系的10倍。这个史无前例的壮观景象将为天文学家研究宇宙中巨大星系的形成过程，提供一个很好的基础。
<P>领导这项研究的天文学家、哈佛-史密斯索尼恩星体物理学中心(Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics)的肯尼斯·雷因斯（Kenneth Rines）说，“已知的宇宙中大多数星系合并的方式就像两辆轿车相撞，然而我们这里发现的却是四个装满沙子的大卡车相撞，沙子四处飞溅。”
<P>除了使用史匹哲望远镜，雷因斯还采用其它天文望远镜观测，证实四个星系确实交织在一起。他们还用NASA的钱德拉X射线天文观测台测量了这个巨大星系群的质量。
<P>雷因斯说，“当合并完成后，这个星系将是宇宙中最大的星系之一。”
<P>这个巨大的四星系合并是史匹哲在观测遥远星系群CL0958+4702时意外发现的。CL0958+4702星系群距离地球50亿光年。史匹哲红外望远镜从聚集在一起的四个椭圆行星系中，发出了一个巨大的扇形的光。那四个星系中有三个像银河系大小，而另外一个是银河系的三倍。 進一步分析发现，这个扇形的光由数十亿颗在碰撞中被甩出的年迈星体构成，而其中一半的星体还将落回星系。
<P>宇宙中星系的碰撞或者互相吞并是很常见的事件，临近的星系因为相互作用会交织在一起，经过数百万年后最终合并成为一体。
<P>在1999年，哈勃望远镜曾经观察到一类形状奇特的星系，被称为红外线超亮度星系(ultra-luminous infrared galaxies )。天文学家认为那是因为数个星系同时碰撞后合并在一起形成的，但是在此之前，还没有发现在多个巨大星系之间这么剧烈的合并过程。
