<p style="text-indent: 22pt; line-height: 200%"><font color="#333333">丙吉是汉宣帝时的丞相，他有一个车夫很喜欢喝酒。一天，车夫驾车载着丙吉外出，因为喝了太多的酒，就将秽物吐在车上。西曹主管痛骂车夫，并打算辞退他。丙吉说：“因为喝醉酒的缘故而辞退他，那将来谁还敢收留他呢？你别生气，先忍耐一下，他只不过是把车子上的垫褥弄脏了而已。”就这样，车夫没有被辞退。
<P>那个车夫来自边疆地区，经常目睹边疆发生的紧急军务的情况。一次外出的时候，正好看见驿站的兵士手持着红白相间、装有紧急公文的布囊奔驰而过。车夫就跟在其后，悄悄打探，终于探听到了敌人已经攻入了云中、代郡等地。于是，他马上来见丙吉，并说：“恐怕敌军入侵的边郡那里，有些驻防官员年纪又老又生病，难以担当抵御入侵的大任了。您最好先查看一下。”丙吉认为他说的有理，于是召集相关官吏，逐个审查边郡官员。还没有审查完毕，宣帝召见丞相和御史大夫，询问边疆战事。丙吉对答如流，而御史大夫却因仓促之间无法详知情况，被降职使用。忠于职守的丙吉受到了人们的称赞。丙吉非常感谢那个车夫的真诚帮助，而车夫之所以有此举动，也全是因为丙吉的宽宏大量。
<P>宋朝的郭進在山西担任巡检时，有个军校在朝廷上状告他。后经过调查，发现这是一起诬告事件。宋太祖下令将军校送到郭進处，让其诛杀。这时正赶上北汉举兵侵犯，郭進对那个军校说：“你能在朝廷上诬告我，说明你很有胆量。我且赦免你的罪过。如果你能杀退敌兵，我就向朝廷举荐你；如果你不能，你就自己跳河吧，免得玷污了我的宝剑。”那个军校在后来的战事中，英勇非凡，帮助郭進最终取得了胜利。郭進随即向朝廷举荐，使他得到了提拔。
<P>这两个事例中的主人公，因为能够宽以待人，所以别人才会舍身相报。这难道不是真正的聪明之举吗？
