<p style="text-indent: 22pt; line-height: 200%"><font color="#333333"><P>贺灿然是秀水人，明万历年间，他以太学生的身份跟随同县的御史姚思仁巡视河南。当时正值中州闹大饥荒，贺灿然目睹百姓之艰辛困苦，特地写了份上疏，力劝姚思仁马上向朝廷请求赈灾，以救黎民于水火，无数人因此而得以活了下来。 </P>
<P>姚思仁曾经在山东等地任职，他持法过于严正，很多违法者被其处以死刑。后来，姚思仁有一天病重，在昏迷中被摄至冥司，有群鬼向他索命，冥王责问他说：“你为什么喜好杀戮？”姚思仁说：“我身为御史是为天子执行法律，这些人犯了罪应当被处死。</P>
<P>冥王说：“你当官却不能体察上天有好生之德，不能体恤百姓疾苦，反而草菅人命，你自己罪孽深重，罪不可赦。” </P>
<P>姚思仁此时可能已明白了自己的过错，更知道了善恶是有报应的，天理是绝对公正的，不敢再狡辩，他想起了自己曾帮助贺灿然上疏救灾之事，于是向冥王说：“当年河南大灾，我上疏向朝廷请求赈灾，因此得以活命的不下千万，难道不可以赎罪吗？”冥王说：“这是贺灿然做的，已经注定他中年大富大贵了！”姚思仁说：“虽然上疏不是我写的，但不经过我怎么能够上呈朝廷呢？” </P>
<P>冥王略微思考了一下，点头应允，让下面的官吏驱散群鬼，让姚思仁还阳，姚思仁这才暂时保住了一条性命。</P>
<P>后来贺灿然果真象冥王所说的中年开始大富大贵，他四十岁成进士，后来官至吏部尚书。 </P>
<P>其实“神目如电”，上天在时时洞悉人的善恶真伪，并给予人相应的善报和恶报。而且人命关天，枉杀无辜害人性命，那可是要以命偿命和饱受天谴的，这是天理；反之，做了救人这样积大德之事，上天也会赐予厚报，就象故事中的贺灿然那样。<BR></P></font></td>
