<P></P>这个四个银河系发生剧烈碰撞后，将最终融合成为一个巨大的星系，新的巨大星系质量大约有我们这个银河系的10倍。这个史无前例的壮观景象将为天文学家研究宇宙中巨大星系的形成过程，提供一个很好的基础。
<P><B>宇宙中的罕见碰撞和合并</B>
<P>领导这项研究的天文学家、哈佛-史密斯索尼恩星体物理学中心(Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics)的肯尼斯．雷因斯说，“已知的宇宙中大多数星系合并的方式就像两辆轿车相撞，然而我们这里发现的却是四个装满沙子的大卡车相撞，沙子四处飞溅。”

<P>除了使用史匹哲望远镜，雷因斯还采用其它天文望远镜观测，证实四个星系确实交织在一起。还用NASA的钱拉德X先天文观测太台测量了这个巨大星系群的质量。
<P>雷因斯说，“当合并完成后，这个星系将是宇宙中最大的星系之一。”
<P><B>意外发现 </B>
<P>这个巨大的四星系合并是史匹哲在观测遥远星系群CL0958+4702时意外发现的。CL0958+4702星系群距离地球50亿光年。史匹哲红外望远镜从聚集在一起的四个椭圆行星系中，发出了一个巨大的风扇形状的光。那四个星系中有三个像银河系大小，而另外一个有银河系的三倍。
<P>进一步分析发现，这个扇形的光由数十亿颗在碰撞中被甩出的年迈星体构成，而其中一半的星体还将落回星系。

<P><B>天体碰撞经常发生</B>
<P>宇宙中星系的碰撞或者互相吞并是很常见的事件，临近的星系因为引力作用会交织在一起，经过数百万年后最终合并成为一体。尽管在此过程中星体会像沙子一样被甩开，它们之间有很大的空间，而且在其中能够留下来。
<P>过去研究记载中比较多的，是大的星系和数个小的星系之间的合并，也叫“小型”合并。比如迄今为止最为详细的小型合并正发生在在一个叫“蛛网星系”的大星系上进。这个巨大的星系捕获了12个小的星系，并把它们放在自己的“网”里面。
<P>也有宇航员曾经观察到两个大小相近的巨大星系之间的“大型”合并，但是在此之前，还没有发现在多个巨大星系之间的合并过程。
<P>我们生存的银河系将在50亿年后将和另外一个名叫Andromeda的星系发生合并。
<P><B>缺乏气体的吞并过程 </B>
<P>史匹哲望远镜提供的数据还显示，这个巨大的合并过程缺乏气体。理论学家推测巨大的星系可以以不同的方式生成，或者富含气体、或者缺少气体。在富有气体的合并中，星系浸泡在气体中，并激发新星形成；而在缺乏气体的合并中，没有新星形成。
<P>而史匹哲在这个四星系合并中，没有发现新星。因此科学家认为，这是一个缺少气体的合并。
<P>巨大的吞并过程中，一些被甩出去的星体将在星系的边界之外孤立地生存。从理论上说，这些被抛弃的星体可以有自己的行星。果真如此，那些行星的夜空和我们的会有很大差别：那里星星很少，星系清晰可见。</P>
