<p style="text-indent: 22pt; line-height: 200%"><font color="#333333"><P>康僧会是三国时期著名的佛教高僧，曾在江东地区传播佛法。他的祖先是康居人，但世代居住在印度，他的父亲因为经商而迁到交趾。他十几岁时，双亲就去世了。等到守孝期满，他就出家修行了。康僧会修行非常精進，为人有雅量，有才识，笃志好学。他不仅精通佛经，还博览群书，天文地理，无所不通。
<P>当时孙权统治江东，佛教尚未盛行。康僧会决心在江浙地区传播佛法，于是手持锡杖东游吴地。吴国赤乌十年（公元248年）时，他来到东吴的都城建业（今南京），修建茅舍，设立佛像，开始传播佛法。
<P>当时，吴国人初次见到沙门（和尚），对佛法还不了解，觉的很怪异。当地官员向孙权上奏：“有胡人来到我国，自称是沙门，但穿着服饰与常人不同，此事应查实。”孙权说：“以前汉明帝曾梦到神像，号称为佛。此人所做的事，可能是其遗俗吧！”
<P>于是，孙权召见了康僧会，问他有何灵验之事。僧会回答：“虽然如来佛祖涅槃已有千年，但是，佛祖的遗骨舍利却神耀无比。当年阿育王修造了八万四千座佛塔。塔寺的修建，以示佛法的流行。”孙权认为他夸大其词，说：“如果你能得到舍利，我就为你造塔；如果所说虚妄，就按国法处置。”僧会请求以七日为限。于是，他对弟子说：“佛法的兴废在此一举，今天如果不至诚祈求，今后佛法如何流传。”
<P>于是，僧会与弟子们共同斋戒沐浴，在静室中打坐，将铜瓶置于几案之上，烧香祈祷。等到第七天，却寂然无声。于是，他请求再给七日时间，到第七天，还如从前。孙权认为僧会在欺骗他，打算加罪于他。但僧会又请求再宽限七日。僧会对其弟子说：“佛法灵验应显现舍利，只是我们不够虔诚，没有感动神灵。何用吴王处置，我们应当誓死为期。”到了第三个七日的傍晚，还是不见舍利显现，众弟子莫不震惊。到了五更时分，忽然听到瓶中镗啷有声，僧会亲自去查看，果然感得舍利。
<P>第二天清晨，僧会将舍利呈献给孙权，孙权召集文武百官上朝，共同观看舍利。只见舍利散发着五色光芒，耀眼夺目，照耀瓶上。孙权亲手拿起宝瓶，把舍利倾倒在铜盘上，舍利落到铜盘之上，铜盘随即破碎。孙权大惊失色，对舍利肃然起敬，说道：“这真是稀世之宝。”僧会進而说道：“舍利神圣而有威力，不仅光芒四射，而且烈火不能焚烧，金刚之杵不能破碎。”
<P>于是，孙权命人试验。僧会再次发誓：“佛法刚刚传播，苍生仰赖佛法的恩泽，愿再次降临神迹，以显威灵。”于是，孙权命人将舍利置于铁砧之上，让大力士用铁槌使劲击打，然而铁砧与铁槌都砸坏了，只有舍利完好无损。
<P>孙权大为赞叹，命人修建佛塔，因为初次修建佛寺，故取名为建初寺，此地被称为佛陀里。于是长江以西佛法开始盛行。<BR></SPAN><FONT face=宋体></FONT></P></font></td>
