<p style="text-indent: 22pt; line-height: 200%"><font color="#333333">清代乾隆二十年间，朝廷派出某侍郎大人，来到黄河视察，驻在陶庄公馆。这已是一年中的除夕了，这个侍郎骑着马，后面跟着四个随从，提着灯火巡河。他们行走在冰天雪地中，一眼望去黄茅白苇，心里觉得很凄凉。忽然间草丛中有个布帐，透露出昏光的烛光。于是立即去查见，原来是当地值班的主簿（官职名）。
<P>侍郎很欣赏他的勤劳，对他大加夸奖。主簿请示说：“大人除夕夜到此，现已三更了，天寒地冻的，我这儿有除夕酒肴，献上一杯，不知如何？”侍郎笑着接受了，喝了数杯，回到陶庄公馆。感到疲倦，于是解衣而卧，梦中依旧骑马巡河，但觉得所到之处，并非刚才看到的景色。
<P>走了大概有二里路，有火光从一座茅舍中透出来，侍郎去敲门。有个老太太来开门，仔细一看，竟然是他已经去世的母亲。她见侍郎到来，惊道：“儿啊，你怎么会到这里来啊？”侍郎告诉他说是巡河的缘故。老夫人说：“你可知道这不是人间。你既然来了，如何能回去呢？”侍郎这才悟出太夫人已死，自己也已经死了，于是大哭。太夫人说：“河西边有位高僧，法力特别大，我带你去求求他，看能不能帮你回去。”侍郎于是随行。
<P>他们来到一个庙宇，庄严得如王者的皇宫。南面坐了一位高僧，闭目不言。侍郎跪下叩拜，高僧不理会他。侍郎再拜，高僧仍不理他。侍郎问道：“我奉天子的命令来巡查黄河，即使有什么罪行该死，也应该告诉我，让我心服口服啊，为何您像哑巴一样不理我呢？”老僧笑道：“你杀死的人太多，福禄折耗已尽，还问什么？”侍郎说：“我杀人虽多，但那些都是按照国法应该杀的啊，并非我的罪过呀！”高僧说：“你当时办案的时候，真的是心里只有国法吗？你是贪图私利，迎合权奸，想得宠升官而已！”于是取案上的玉如意，直指他的心。侍郎觉得一条冷气刺入心窝，冷彻五脏，心跳不止，汗如雨下，害怕得不能说话。过了一阵后他说：“我知罪了，以后改过，行吗？”高僧说：“你并非能够改过之人，但今天还不是你的死期，以后再下地狱算总账吧。”于是吩咐一个和尚说：“带他回去，送回阳间。”
<P>有个和尚走过来，带他同行，走过了一段黑路，回到了陶庄公馆。他死去的母亲走过来，哭道：“儿啊，你活不了几天了！你为什么在执法时，不秉公办事，却贪图私利，迎合权奸，妄想得宠升官呢？”侍郎面对母亲，无地自容，长叹一声，便从梦中醒来。
<P>这时天已经到中午了，众多官员都上门来恭贺新年，都感疑惑：“侍郎平时都起得很早，今天是元旦，都快到中午了，怎么还在睡呢？”侍郎也不好明确告诉他们缘由。不久，侍郎生病，吐血而亡。 <BR><BR>正是：

<CENTER>身为执法官员， <BR>满口依法办案。<BR>心里打着小算盘：<BR>盘珠粒粒私串。
<P>以为上苍瞎眼，<BR>左右无人看见。<BR>贪财贪色又贪权，<BR>怎奈神目如电！
<P>森森刀山须历，<BR>炎炎火海须溺。<BR>桩桩罪报都到齐，<BR>届时悔之晚矣！</CENTER>
