<p style="text-indent: 22pt; line-height: 200%"><font color="#333333">通政使罗仰山在礼部任职时，为一位同僚所倾轧。同僚常常在公事上对他相掣肘，使他如行荆棘之中，寸步难行。因为罗仰山性格内向，渐渐为此抑郁成疾。
<P>一天，罗仰山正郁郁枯坐，忽然梦见来到了一座山上。那里花开水流，风日清旷，顿觉神思开朗，垒块顿消。他沿着小溪散步，见到了一个茅舍。茅舍中的老翁请他到屋里坐。两人相谈甚欢。老翁问他为何面有病容，罗仰山将自己的处境告诉了老翁。老翁听罢，叹息说道：“这是有前世的夙因的，你是不知道啊。”
<P>老翁告诉他：你七百年前是宋朝的黄筌，你的那个同僚是南唐的徐熙。徐熙的绘画技艺，本来就在黄筌之上，但是黄筌惟恐徐熙借此夺了他的宫廷供奉之宠，于是就在皇帝面前巧言利色，排挤徐熙。徐熙因此沉沦困顿，含恨而死。其后，你二人辗转轮回，几世不能相遇。如今，业缘巧合，你二人得以同朝为官，他怎能不报前仇？你曾经加给他的痛苦，正是你以前加到他的身上的，你又有什么可抱怨的呢？世界上的事无往而不返，是天道；有施必有报，这是人情。既已种了因，就一定会有结果。恩怨的遇合，就如日月的旋转，必有交会之时。所以，种种害人之术，总是以害人者起，以害己者终。我上辈子是你的一位老朋友，看你至今尚不醒悟，特来向你解释因果关系。你与他的宿怨已经告一段落。从今以后，你要谨慎处世，不要再种什么恶因了。
<P>罗仰山听了这话，心中明白了，一切胜负之心全部消失。数日之内，心病全消，也不再抑郁了。
